Norwegian saxophonist and composer Gaute Solaas has performed for live audiences since age eleven. Dividing his musical life between total improvisation and through-composed music, he spent his younger years working professionally in Europe before relocating to the US in 1995. There he attended full-time music composition studies at the Eastman School of Music and the New York University. Gaute lived in New York for a total of 10 years, dividing his time between advanced telecom and advanced music. He returned to Norway in 2005, and now works as managing director for the Norwegian Wind Ensemble.
As a saxophone player, Gaute has worked with musicians from the European "ECM environment" as well as players from the New York City avantgarde scene, steadily maintaining relations to both sides of the ocean for 14 years. His musical mission, since age 14..., has always been an attempt to fuse the traditional European artmusic tradition with modern American improvisational music.
Tired of being labeled "an early bloomer" since childhood, yet without any credits at age 36, he is now finally prioritizing composing and performing materials that will make up his long belated release as a frontman, on own digital label Sunhill Creative. Expected release; winter 2010.
